Why do some chemical peels need neutralising
Aug 3
Chemical peels work by using carefully selected acids to loosen the bonds between dead skin cells and encourage controlled exfoliation. However, not every chemical peel behaves in the same way. Some peels are self-neutralising, while others must be deliberately neutralised to stop their activity.
What Does Neutralising a Chemical Peel Mean?
Neutralising involves applying a suitable neutralising solution to stop the action of the acid and help return the skin towards its normal pH. This gives the practitioner greater control over how long the peel remains active and the depth of exfoliation achieved.
If a peel that requires neutralisation is left active for too long, it may continue penetrating the skin. This can increase the risk of excessive inflammation, prolonged redness, burns, unwanted pigmentation and damage to the skin barrier.
Which Peels May Need Neutralising?
Alpha hydroxy acid peels, including glycolic acid and lactic acid formulations, commonly require neutralisation. However, this depends on the individual product and its formulation.
Some chemical peels are designed to self-neutralise as they interact with the skin, while others are removed using water or another method specified by the manufacturer. Practitioners should never assume that every acid is treated in the same way.
Why Professional Knowledge Matters
Safe chemical peel treatments require more than simply applying and removing a product. Practitioners must understand peel chemistry, pH, concentration, timing, skin assessment, contraindications and treatment endpoints.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific peel being used. The correct neutralisation method, application time and removal procedure can vary between products.
Understanding why and when a chemical peel should be neutralised helps practitioners deliver safer, more controlled treatments while achieving better results for their clients.
